An Interview with Lydia Stephens

Meet Lydia. I've written about her before and I'll certainly write about her again. Our friendship is one that makes me want to fill notebooks. She is wise, in the most gentle way. Her first inclination is to listen and then to love, always. When we're together, we're singing, driving to the library, or eating chocolate chips. Enjoy! xx

On reading:

Reading is something that I retired for a long period of my busy life. I recently started reading again when I realized that I wanted to make it a priority and slow down more often. I always judge a book by it’s cover; blue draws my attention the most. My favorite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers because it tells the Biblical story of Gomer and Hosea in a fictional setting; it radically changed my view of God’s love. My favorite place to read is on a couch at my home in Des Moines with Myla (my dog) at my side. I also enjoy reading really late into the night when everyone else is asleep. There is something so fantastic about being awake when the rest of the world is sleeping.

On how you spend your Saturday afternoons:

Saturday afternoons have always looked different throughout various stages and seasons of my life. I either wake up early and go for a long run (post coffee), or sleep in and take the day off of running. I love to do homework at a leisurerly pace on Saturdays. I like to be slowly productive so I’ll usually take a lot of Pinterest, reading, or talking breaks. Café Diem is my FAVORITE because they have a five-star playlist, dirty chai [w/ almond milk], and chicken salad. Hitting up a thrift store on a Saturday might also be on the agenda.

On your go to dinner party plan:

I’m imagining my best dinner party happening five years from now. Guests arrive around 7 to wine and appetizers. After dinner is served we play a longgggg game of cards. I truly believe that there is nothing more exciting than being in GREAT company while playing a game of cards. That was a bold statement, but TRY it because it’s a blast. Two of my favorites are Scum and Dutch Blitz. Background music will be a mix between Drake, Chris Stapleton, Hozier, The Temptations, Luther Vandross, and Billy Joel. (Reader, are you taking in the perfection of this playlist?)

On your personal uniform:

I love a cozy sweater, jeans, and wool socks because I get cold sooo easily. I like my jean jacket also. My closet is coded with deep greens, blues, and all the good neutrals. I hang my shirts up inside-out, and I have a huge bin of warm running gear that I wear often.

On what speaks to you:

I had to think about this one for awhile. I think I’ve landed on just simply living in the moment, and living in grace. So what if I get a bad grade on a test, mess up in an interview, or don’t have time to workout? Nobody cares, LIVE IN GRACE – be gentle with yourself. Specific moments, people, or things that speak to me are: a bouquet of flowers, a musical, the sunrise, a long run by myself, a special date, a handwritten letter, a radical teacher, childhood memories, the Grand Canyon, a game of soccer, a road trip with my dad, Mike Householder, an honest child, a quiet walk, a movie with a dear friend, a family dinner, and a hike in the mountains.
